#4—posting and commenting
–write a new post that is a response to the writing of another blogger. This response is different from a “comment.” In this post you are using another writer’s points as points of comparison. You agree or disagree. You react to what someone else has been writing about in a blog of your own.
–pingback the writer of the blog you are responding to.
Use “trackbacks” to ping the writer.
–HAND IN A WORD DOC (due by Wednesday November 4)
Cut and Paste your substantive comments from at least four other people’s blogs. Cut and paste your comments onto a Word Doc and hand them in as a writing assignment. Include the URL where I can verify your post if needed.
What is a “substantive comment”?
1. No weasel comments. A weaseler is a lazy person. Weasel comments, therefore, are those that are too general and don’t reflect a thoughtful interaction with someone’s writing.
Examples of weasel posts: “Great post. I like what you wrote about.” Or “Well, I disagree.”
2. Leave your URL at close of your comment. Remember that you are working to encourage others to read your work. Show them how to find you.
3. Offer specific things about the person’s post that you liked or didn’t like. Give feedback that says something!
RULES OF THUMB
Never say something on the internet that you wouldn’t feel comfortable saying to someone in person. Be polite and respectful, even when you disagree with someone. If someone is rude in a comment on one of your posts, don’t post their comment and don’t stoop to their level of being disrespectful.
Never post anything that is too personal or too revealing. If you would be embarrassed to have your grandmother read it, don’t write it!
If someone comments on your blog, write back and thank them. If relevant, respond to any questions or points of interest. Remember: one of our objectives with our blogs is to stimulate written exchanges about your topic.

I was wondering, I found a very good post to respond to, but it’s not my blog topic. Could I still do it anyway?
Yes. You can respond to any blog or even to an online article that invites comments. I am most interested in seeing you practice good commenting. Remember: no “weasel” words, leave specific feedback, and leave your URL as a calling card at the end of your comment. Have fun!
